Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Has The Club's Support Following PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's natural for concerns to be asked about his future following a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in 12 matches, marking the team's worst run after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie champions on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I have got significant support from above,” Slot stated.
“It would be great to turn it around and get a victory naturally but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my role. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Discussions with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his conversations with the club's leadership, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me constantly of the day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “During our regular exchanges I sense the belief. However I've not talked to them since this defeat yet so let’s see.”
Familiar Problems and Player Reaction
The manager lamented recurring weaknesses from his squad in their European loss, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the solutions. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” the midfielder said.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger internally. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen this club since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a period of this nature with outcomes so bad.”
Jones finished, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And as long as that badge is removed, we’re always going to compete.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad back to where it needs to be, show everyone once more what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
